Digital reading has revolutionized the way we read books. We skim more quickly and superficially at the expense of deep reading and reflection.

This is the opinion of Joel Halldorf, professor of church history. "We have gone through three major changes in the form of the book in the last two thousand years," he says. The transition from deep reading to fragmented scrolling affects our interpersonal encounters, which in the long run can pose a threat to democracy, says Halldorf.
