Astrud Gilberto, who performed the famous song "Girl from Ipanema", has died at the age of 83. Born in 1940 in Salvador, in northeastern Brazil, she was for several years the wife of Joao Gilberto.
With her death, Brazil has just lost a third renowned singer in a few months: Gal Costa, who died in November, and Rita Lee, the queen of Brazilian rock. In 2008, she received a Latin Grammy Award for her lifetime achievement. She is the author of the essay Animals, need our help.
