Man, 47, said to have scratched the surface of two memorial columns with spikes on the soles of his shoes. State security agency is now investigating him on suspicion of damaging property that is harmful to the public.

The Holocaust Memorial is a field of around 2,700 concrete steles near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and was opened in 2005. It is the central German place of remembrance of the genocide against European Jews unleashed by the National Socialists. Around six million people fell victim.
