A one-month-old baby dies from whooping cough, an infection against which the mother was not vaccinated. In a review of the cases registered in 2023, the death of one infant, without risk conditions, whose mother had not been vaccinated during pregnancy, has been noted.

Vaccination in pregnant women has been shown to be the most cost-effective measure to prevent serious cases in infants, which has radically reduced the number of cases in Spain. Neither natural infection with B. pertussis nor vaccination confers prolonged immunity.
