Trams, also known as "street trams", refer to light-duty rail transit vehicles that are powered by electricity and run on tracks, generally no more than five knots. Trams have become "the most controversial of all modern public transportation vehicles," says Zhou Qunfeng.

Data released by the China Urban Rail Transit Association shows that as of December 31, 2023, there are 23 cities operating trams in mainland China, with a total length of operating lines of 580.25 kilometers.
