Hafize Gaye Erkan, in office for less than a year, announced her resignation following a scandal involving her family. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan probably wanted to get rid of a controversy less than two months before the local elections.

The banker, the first Turkish woman in this position and very popular in the markets, is accused by several media of having granted advantages to her family within the institution, which she denies. Unlike many of her predecessors, Hafize Gayeseran was not fired because she was reluctant to apply the policy dictated by the president.
