Chancellor Olaf Scholz blames a psychological problem for this - and sees an even greater need. The federal government has set itself the goal of building 100,000 social housing units in Germany every year.

According to estimates, only a quarter of these will be built nationwide in 2022. Federal Construction Minister Klara Geywitz announced in December that she was expecting 265,000 new apartments in 2024. Around 270,000 apartments will have been completed by the end of 2023, according to the DIW.
