Scallops farmed in Funka Bay reach their peak landing season in Hokkaido's Oshamabe Town. Of the 15,000 tons of scallops landed in the town last year, about half were exported to China.
Domestic sales require processing to remove the shells instead of shelling them for shipment to China, and there is a limit to the amount that can be handled. The peak season for catching scallips lasts until the end of May in Oshamanbe Town.
