Steven Spielberg declined to caption Spanish on
West Side Story
.
A decision which, for the filmmaker, was in perfect harmony with his project to adapt the famous Broadway musical.
“If I had subtitled Spanish, I would have simply reinforced English by giving it the upper hand over Spanish.
I needed to respect the language enough not to subtitle it, ”he told IGN.
Up to the present
In the same vein, Steven Spielberg insisted on hiring only actors of Puerto Rican descent to embody the Sharks gang. In the end, the 20 actors selected come from Puerto Rico or are part of the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York.
The
West Side Story
remake
was released last Wednesday in French theaters, 60 years after Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins' adaptation starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, George Chakiris and Rita Moreno.
As such, Steven Spielberg had the intelligence to make the bridge with the classic of 1961, in particular by offering a role to Rita Moreno who, at the time, had been made up to darken her complexion on the screen.
One way to support a respectable approach a little more: give a timeless classic all its brilliance by raising it up to the challenges of the present.
