Report: China’s urbanization rate is expected to reach 65.5% by 2025, with over 80 million new rural migrants
China News Service, Beijing, August 17 (Reporter Chen Su) The "China Rural Development Report 2020" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") jointly released by the Institute of Rural Development of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the China Social Sciences Press on the 17th is expected to reach 2025 The annual urbanization rate in China will reach 65.5%, and more than 80 million people will be transferred from rural areas.
The report is composed of a main report, a comprehensive chapter, an economic chapter, a society chapter, and an ecological environment chapter and other 19 special reports. It summarizes China’s rural development during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) and During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period (2021-2025), the prospects for rural development are expected.
The report pointed out that during the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, China has achieved remarkable results in ensuring food security, promoting agricultural transformation and upgrading, integrating rural primary, secondary and tertiary industries, and increasing farmers' incomes and becoming rich. The goal and task of poverty alleviation is almost complete. However, there are still many problems in the development of rural areas, such as the decline of farmers' enthusiasm for growing grain, the increasing difficulty of farmers' continuous income increase, the increasing aging of rural areas, and the prominent shortcomings of rural people's livelihoods, which require great attention.
The report predicts that China's rural development will show new characteristics during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. By 2025, China’s urbanization rate will reach 65.5%. It is conservatively estimated that the new rural migration population will exceed 80 million; the proportion of agricultural employment will drop to about 20%; the proportion of rural population over 60 will reach 25.3%, which is about 124 million people; Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Beijing, and Tianjin are expected to take the lead in basically achieving the target value of agricultural and rural modernization around 2025, leading the country’s rural development.
Regarding the development of China’s urbanization, the report pointed out that China’s urban-rural integration development has maintained a continuous improvement trend. It is necessary to continue to steadily increase the level of population urbanization, prioritize the promotion of urban-rural integration in the development of urban-rural integration, promote the free flow of urban and rural elements, and improve urban and rural basics. The level of equalization of public services, the development of the integration of the tertiary industry, to resolve the urban-rural dual economy, and to further increase the construction of beautiful villages.
