At 13:02 on May 22, Comrade Wu Mengchao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the pioneers and main founders of Hepatobiliary Surgery in my country, and the former Vice President of the Second Military Medical University, died in Shanghai at the age of 99 due to ineffective medical treatment.

Academician Wu Mengchao is known as the "Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery". He has been in medicine for more than 70 years and has successfully treated more than 16,000 patients.

Although this is an astronomical figure in the eyes of the world, he often said with emotion: "I am old, and I don't have as much time to work as young people, so we must race against time!"

In Wu Mengchao's opinion, “A good doctor sees illness in his eyes and pretends to be human.” In winter rounds, he would heat up the stethoscope before using it; every time he checked the patient, he would help. They pulled up their clothes and fastened their belts.

Academician Wu Mengchao was born in August 1922, a native of Minqing, Fujian. He joined the workforce in August 1949, joined the Party in March 1956, and joined the army in June 1956.

He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991 and won the highest national science and technology award in 2005.
