Consumers confirmed to "Emirates Today" that the prices of discount offers during the current month of Ramadan rose by rates that reached in some of them to 47% compared to the previous period, noting that the total number of offers for some discounts decreased a lot.

They demanded a reduction in bid prices, and tighter control over sales outlets.

For their part, two officials in the outlets said that the increase in the prices of some offers and the decrease in their number is a natural result of the increase in the prices of a number of commodities and oil prices, in addition to the increase in the cost of shipping, stressing that it is difficult for offers to remain at their previous price values.

Consumer complaints

The consumer, Radwa Ahmed, said that she noticed that the discount offers became few, and they did not provide options as they were before, in addition to that their prices increased exaggeratedly, demanding to reduce the prices of the offers, to mitigate the effects of the current price hikes, and to tighten control over sales outlets.

She explained that she was buying powdered milk as part of a discount offer for a brand of 41 dirhams, but the price in the current offers rose to 57 dirhams, an increase of 39%.

She pointed out that the price of a kilogram of sugar increased in offers from 15 dirhams to 21 dirhams, an increase of 40%, and the price of a food product for children within an offer increased from 19 dirhams to 28 dirhams, an increase of 47%.

She confirmed that the increase included non-food items, such as baby diapers, the price of one of which in the offers increased from 46 dirhams to 58 dirhams in the current offers, an increase of 26%.

Few Offers

Consumer Nada Ibrahim agreed that the number of offers is much less than in the Ramadan season 2021 and the past months, noting that the volume of offer brochures issued by sales outlets has also decreased, and some of them have refrained from issuing such brochures during the recent period.

She emphasized that the prices of the same offers rose, at a time when the number of offers for basic commodities decreased significantly, pointing to the increase in the price of a type of frozen chicken weighing one kilogram in the offer from 25 to 32 dirhams, an increase of 28%, and the increase in the price of a package of soap (4 pieces) from Dhs21 to Dhs28.75, an increase of 37%.

She pointed out that outlets used to offer packs of branded tissues (200 sheets) for 20 dirhams, but the current offers include a pack of tissues (150 sheets) at the same price.

And Ibrahim called for tightening control over sales outlets and merchants and reducing the prices of offers.

price increases

As for the consumer, Enas Ali, for her part, confirmed that the prices of the offers increased than they were previously, in a large number of commodities, at rates ranging between 15 and 20% at least.

She told "Emirates Today" that the price of a variety of imported rice (the weight of two kilograms) rose in offers from 15 to 18 dirhams, an increase of 20%, and the price of a package of pasta increased from 10 dirhams to 11.50 dirhams, an increase of 15%, and the price of a type of pasta Sweets from 10 dirhams to 12 dirhams, an increase of 20%.

She stressed the importance of reducing bid prices, the right of consumers to obtain goods at reasonable prices, and mitigating the effects of price hikes.

In the same context, consumer Adel Samir said that the price of a type of canned food increased from 12 to 15 dirhams, with an increase of 25%, pointing out that he also noticed a clear reduction in the quantity of the preserved food, but it is sold at the previous price.

He also pointed out that the price of food for children in the shows increased from 22 to 30 dirhams, an increase of more than 36%.

natural result

In addition, an official at the outlet, Muhammad Al-Assaad, said that the increase in the prices of offers, and the decrease in their number, is a natural result of the increase in the prices of a number of commodities, given international conditions, such as the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the rise in oil prices, in addition to the high prices of freight and raw materials used. In manufacturing, some of them decreased, amid expectations that the rise would continue if these conditions continued.

Al-Assaad stressed that the outlets in general are keen to continue the offers, to ease the burdens on consumers, but it is very difficult to put them at the same previous prices, because this means inflicting large losses on suppliers.

Attractive offers

For his part, the official in another outlet, Masoud Anal, considered that the high prices of offers and the decrease in their number, come as a result of international circumstances that impose themselves on the countries of the world without exception.

He stressed that sales outlets resort to relieving consumers through the continuation of offers, agreeing with his counterpart that it is difficult to display them at their previous price values.

He continued, "Despite the price hikes, the price of the offers remains attractive and appropriate for consumers."
