• Invited on BFMTV this Monday, Jordan Bardella made known his opposition to a possible extension of the legal retirement age.

  • As an argument, the head of the RN list for regional elections in Île-de-France affirmed that life expectancy in good health was declining in France.

  • However, if general life expectancy has indeed fallen in 2020 because of the excess mortality due to the Covid-19 epidemic, life expectancy in good health has increased in recent years.

Is life expectancy in good health really declining in France, as Jordan Bardella asserts? Invited on the set of BFMTV the day after the first round of the regional and departmental elections, the vice-president of the National Rally, head of the list in the Île-de-France region, made known on Monday his opposition to a possible return of the pension reform. This very controversial project, at the origin of an intense movement of social protest in 2019, had in fact had to be suspended with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic. The reform has since been mentioned again by the President of the Republic.

"There are only the liquidators from above, the predators from above who direct us, who very often play into the hands of the big banks, big finance, who consider that we can work up to 70 years, ”criticized Jordan Bardella in reference to a possible extension of the legal retirement age.

Adding that “life expectancy in good health is declining in our country, and that is what must be kept in mind.

FAKE OFF

However, this is not the opinion of the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees) which noted, in December 2020, that "disability-free life expectancy" had increased " 1 year and 6 months for women and 1 year and 8 months for men ”between 2008 and 2018.

This indicator, also called "healthy life expectancy" or "health expectancy" is calculated by the DREES in addition to the simple "life expectancy" (79.2 years for men and 85.3 years for men. women in 2020, according to INSEE), which corresponds to "the average number of years that a fictitious generation can expect to live by being subject, at each age, to the mortality conditions of a given year".

To calculate the number of years to live without a disability, the Drees selected a representative sample of people and asked them if they had felt “limited for at least six months, due to a health problem, in activities. that people usually do ”.

"In 2019, a 65-year-old woman can expect to live 11.5 years without disability and 18.5 years without severe disability", while "a man, 10.4 years without disability and 15.7 years without severe disability" , notes the Drees.

These results put France above the European average, with around five months more healthy life expectancy.

The Covid-19 pandemic lowers general life expectancy

The year 2020 was marked by a sharp increase in deaths due to the Covid-19 epidemic with 669,000 deaths, or 56,000 more than in 2019, notes INSEE.

The general life expectancy, which is subject to the mortality conditions of a given year, has thus fallen by 0.5 years compared to 2019 for women, and 0.6 years for men.

This sudden drop can, to a lesser extent, be put into perspective with that observed in 2015, when the winter flu was particularly deadly.

Women saw their life expectancy drop by 0.3 years and men by 0.2 years, without however preventing the curve from rising again the following year.
