Madame Bovary by Yves Saint Laurent © Gallimard
"It was during his adolescence in Oran that Yves Saint Laurent's passion for literature was born and began to transcribe and illustrate certain literary works, including Madame Bovary, whose character Emma seemed to fascinate him. In 1951, in At the age of 15, based on Flaubert's work, he created 14 illustrations in black ink, with slight gouache highlights, drawing the silhouette of a passionate heroine moving in a dream Normandy. Many years later, on the subject of his collections, Yves Saint Laurent evokes these figures of women whom he “
dresses up like an author would write a play
for him,” to use Françoise Giroud's words. “
Often I also think of Madame Bovary. , he
confides.
This character is extremely contemporary.
Madame Bovary expresses the distress of women, which is the same today as it was a century ago.
»Published in their entirety for the first time, these moving illustrations, from the collection of the Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Foundation, are accompanied by the full text of Madame Bovary.
