The singer Joan-Pau Verdier, a figure of Occitan culture and the revival of folk music in the 70s, died on the night of Saturday to Sunday at the age of 73 from the consequences of an illness, announced his companion. Major figure of Occitan song, libertarian artist admirer of Léo Ferré, Joan-Pau Verdier, born in 1947 in Périgueux, had recorded his first record in 1973 and had notably founded Bigaroc with Jean-Bonnefon and participated in the Perigourdin group Peiraguda.
A well-known voice on the air
Host of a program in French, he was a well-known voice for over 20 years on the radio France Bleu Périgord, who announced his death on Sunday in Brive, Corrèze. In total, he had published 17 albums including Tabou-le-chat , Le chantepleure , and a last opus, Les dreams gigognes , released in 2010.
The Occitan poet was one of the craftsmen of the French folk revival of the first half of the 1970s, alongside the Bretons of Tri Yann and Alan Stivell.
