With Vangelis, part of the history of music, and more particularly of film music, has disappeared.
The Greek artist, whose real name was Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, inspired a generation of musicians, including his contemporaries like Jean-Michel Jarre.
The legend of French electronic music delivered an emotional tribute to the star on social networks.
“Dear Vangelis, we will all forever remember your unique touch and soulful melodies.
You and I have always shared the same passion for synthesizers and electronic music for so long… May you rest in peace, ”wrote the musician on Twitter in the caption of a photo of his colleague.
On all fronts
Vangelis had notably distinguished himself with the soundtracks of cult films such as
Blade Runner
,
1492: Christopher Columbus
, (in which the iconic
Conquest of Paradise
appears ) or even
Chariots of Fire
, which had earned him an Oscar de la Best Film Music in 1981 against the soundtrack of
Raiders of the Lost Ark
, by John Williams, which is not nothing... Very popular in France (he had also signed the music for several documentaries by Commander Cousteau), where he lived part of the year, between London and Athens, the artist had been made Knight of Arts and Letters in 1992.
According to several Greek media, Vangelis died of heart problems linked to Covid-19.
He was 79 years old.
