Born in Nanchang, Jiangxi on April 18, 1921, Xu Yuanchong, who graduated from Southwest Associated University in 1943, chose one thing and devoted his life to the translation of Chinese-English and Chinese-French literature, hoping to make the world feel the beauty of Chinese traditional culture.
Xu Yuanchong has published more than 100 translations of Chinese, English and French works at home and abroad. He has translated Chinese "The Analects", "The Book of Songs", "Chu Ci", and "The Western Chamber" into English and French. "Madam", "Red and Black", "John Christophe" and other translations into Chinese.
His Chinese-English translation of "Chu Ci" was praised by American scholars as "a peak in the field of English and American literature."
"West Chamber" was evaluated by the British publishing industry as "comparable to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"".
In 2010, Xu Yuanchong won the "Lifetime Achievement Award for Translation Culture" issued by the China Translators Association.
In 2014, at the age of 93, he won the "Northern Lights Outstanding Literary Translation Award", the highest award in the international translation industry.
