Responding to a call on social networks, high school and college girls challenged, Monday, the "proper dress" required by most regulations of institutions, which they consider sexist.

Last week, with the temperatures rising, the outfits got lighter.

On social networks, stories of establishments refusing entry to young girls because of clothes deemed provocative have multiplied.

From there appeared several hashtags (# monday14septembre and # liberationdu14) to encourage middle school and high school girls to come to class on Monday dressed as they wish.

“A lot of the girls got stuck last week because they were wearing crop tops.

The singer Angèle supported the movement on social networks, there was a big mobilization, ”explains Ève, in Première at the Lycée Turgot, in Paris.

At Montaigne high school, Esther, a student in Première, wore jeans and a white "crop top" (short T-shirt): "I don't usually wear any but today I said to myself that I had to do it.

"

Summoned to the principal because we could see her bra

“Last week, I was summoned to the principal because they could see my bra.

He said to me: "We are not at the beach here".

I told him he didn't have to look at my cleavage.

Suddenly my parents will be summoned, ”says Judith, first at the Lycée Condorcet, with the bright red top notched and the navel visible.

According to her, the rules of her school which imposes a "decent dress" is in fact interpreted in a "very vague" way.

In National Education, the control of clothing is part of the internal regulations of each establishment.

"It is always a delicate subject", recognizes Florence Delannoy, condition unionized in Lille.

"Most of the regulations are content with a classic" correct dress "required, that opens the way to various interpretations".

Legal vagueness and sexist stereotypes

The National Union of high school students (UNL), which supports the mobilization, points to the "legal vagueness" surrounding these regulations: "the judgments which are made often join sexist stereotypes", affirms Mathieu Devlaminck, its president.

The high school girls questioned are offended in particular by an argument used to force them to cover themselves up: clothes that are too light could disrupt the smooth running of lessons.

“In second, I was wearing a waistcoat, an education advisor told me that it was not appropriate for high school and that I could 'distract the teachers and the boys'!

Monday on Twitter, Jasmine, in Terminale in Sens (Yonne), posted a video of her outfit admitting to seeing her navel, accompanied by the words "ready to shake the administration".

"We're fed up that it's up to us to change, to cover ourselves up," she sighs.

“It's up to men to change, it's not up to us to adapt.

This movement is a form of rebellion against the regulation imposed by the patriarchy, ”she explains.

“Formulations that truly achieve consensus”

"There is always this idea that the dress of women can provoke attacks," laments Caroline De Haas, of the feminist collective "We all", which supports the movement.

“When we ask them to change it, we make them feel guilty”.

Asked Monday on the sidelines of a trip, the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer advocated "a position of balance and common sense".

“Just dress normally and you'll be fine,” he swept away.

One solution to resolve the issue could be to involve student representatives in the drafting of interiors, argues Philippe Vincent, general secretary of the main union of school leaders (SNPDEN).

In order to arrive at "formulations which make a real consensus".
