Chrome: an extension to see how ads follow us - Geeko

Online advertising is everywhere. If Internet users are aware of it, they do not necessarily know how it works. This is why Google, in a spirit of transparency, has developed a new extension designed to help Internet users understand how advertisements follow their every move on the Internet and therefore are able to know what they like or not.

The Ad Transparency Spotlight extension allows you to know how many advertisements are loaded on a page you are viewing, who the authors of these advertisements are, and also what type of information they use to display these particular advertisements; demographics, remarketing, interests, location, etc. There is also talk of viewing content delivery networks, as well as analytics providers. Thus, Internet users will be able to consult the confidentiality policy of each company, in particular how it collects and stores user data.

For greater control of personal data

“Our new Ads Transparency Spotlight (Alpha) extension for Chrome is part of our ongoing initiative to give users more visibility over the data used to personalize ads and more control over that data,” Google said in a statement. .

Right now, the extension is still in beta and only works for ads served by Google. Ultimately, the American firm hopes that the entire industry will apply its “advertisement disclosure scheme” and be more transparent about its operation.

The objective of Ad Transparency Spotlight is not to limit the number of advertisements displayed on websites, but to make Internet users understand how the advertisements work to collect information about them and to follow them during their internet browsing.
