The cumulative incidence (AI) of the
coronavirus
has increased a bit after the latest Health data released this Friday, standing at
40.85 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Spain
is still
at low risk, but the contagion
has
not decreased
with
2,248 new cases of Covid and 57 new deaths
.
Meanwhile, a study published in the journal Cell Reorts notes that the
Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines
were also
less effective against the Delta and Delta Plus variants
compared to the parent virus.

A study indicates that the variants of Covid Delta and Delta Plus could be resistant to some antibodies
A team from the German Primate Center - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen and their colleagues from the Hanover Faculty of Medicine, the Göttingen University Medical Center and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) have investigated why
the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2
, the virus that causes
Covid-19
, spreads so effectively and whether
Delta Plus viruses
are more dangerous.
In their work, published in the journal
Cell Reports
, they were able to show that
Delta and Delta Plus infect lung cells more effectively than the original virus
. Furthermore, one of the four antibodies used to treat
Covid-19
was not effective against Delta, and Delta Plus was even
resistant against two therapeutic antibodies
.
Similarly, antibodies generated after vaccination with the
BioNTech-Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines
were also
less effective against Delta and Delta Plus
compared to the
parent
virus.
On the other hand, these variants were inhibited comparably, suggesting that Delta Plus may not pose a greater risk to vaccinated people than Delta.
Finally, individuals vaccinated first with Oxford-AstraZeneca and then BioNTech-Pfizer were found to have significantly more Delta-inhibiting antibodies than individuals vaccinated twice with Oxford-AstraZeneca.
Thus, they demonstrate that the combination of two vaccines can induce particularly strong immune protection against SARS-CoV-2 variants.
