(Economic Observation) 5G + Gigabit optical network, Chinese cities have begun to enter the "dual Gigabit" era

China News Agency, Beijing, May 27th (Reporter Liu Yuying) The nation's first "dual gigabit" provincial capital city, the world's first all-optical smart city, and the first to enter the "dual gigabit" city... Recently, a big city in China Compete to increase the "dual gigabit" and "build roads" for the development of the digital economy in advance.

The so-called "dual gigabit" refers to the gigabit fiber network and 5G.

Gigabit optical network has the characteristics of ultra-large bandwidth, ultra-low latency, advanced and reliable, and is the "bearing base" of communication infrastructures such as 5G, data centers, and the Internet of Things. Together with 5G networks, it forms the "two wheels" of the new infrastructure. "Two Wings".

The "Dual Gigabit Network Coordinated Development Action Plan (2021-2023)" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China in March proposes to build more than 20 gigabit cities by the end of 2021; "Goal: To build 100 gigabit cities and create 100 gigabit industry virtual private network benchmark projects.

This year, many well-known cities have taken "dual gigabit" as the key task of new infrastructure construction.

Nanjing stated that according to the indicators of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Nanjing has become the country's first "dual gigabit" provincial capital.

Shanghai has been built as "the world's first city of all-optical smart cities".

Ningbo is built into a "Smart Dual Gigabit City".

Shenzhen, Xiong'an New District and other places have all accelerated the "dual gigabit" network plan.

According to Ao Li, director of the Institute of Technology and Standards at China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China has been leading the development of global optical broadband.

Up to now, more than 300 cities in China have built optical network cities. Through the organization and implementation of 7 batches of telecommunications universal service pilots, the proportion of administrative villages with optical fibers has exceeded 99%, achieving the same network speed in rural cities.

At present, the broadband access bandwidth of Chinese households is mostly several hundred megabytes. With gigabit optical networks, gigabit access can be realized.

Ao Li said that the broadband that Gigabit optical network can provide at the user end is much higher than that of mobile communication, and it has ultra-low latency. Its reliability and anti-electromagnetic interference capability are more advantageous than wireless communication in many scenarios.

Xing Tao, vice president of Huawei's China operator network business department, said that as the roads of the network become wider and wider, the "cars" will naturally come.

It turns out that the business that consumes the most online traffic is video. As Gigabit optical networks become more and more popular, the spatial dimension of video continues to be explored and improved, including free viewing angles and multiple cameras.

So, with 5G, why bother to develop gigabit optical networks at the same time?

Ao Li said that in the past five years, 4G and fiber-optic broadband have developed synergistically, and both users have shown explosive growth.

5G and Gigabit optical fibers face different scenarios. The stability, bandwidth capability, and network construction cost of optical fibers cannot be replaced by mobile communications. The two are in a cooperative relationship.

"Dual Gigabit" will bring huge changes to the family and industry in the future, and generate huge technological dividends.

During the epidemic last year, online classes, online office, and online entertainment all put forward higher requirements on the network. If the network bandwidth is not enough, there will be phenomena such as dropped calls and freezes. Gigabit fiber solves the bandwidth problem.

Gigabit fiber also brings new application scenarios, such as 4K, VR/AR (virtual reality/augmented reality), ultra-high-definition video live broadcast, cloud gaming, etc.

Gigabit optical network and 5G are synergized, and there are abundant industry applications in manufacturing, mining, medical, education, parks and other fields.

In Liebga Village, Gandu Town, Hualong County, Haidong City, Qinghai Province, China Unicom Qinghai has built a gigabit optical network and deployed video backhaul equipment at the mountain top ranch, which can transmit high-definition images of yaks in real time through an all-optical network.

When villagers turn on their mobile phones at home, they can see the physical condition of hundreds of yaks at any time.

"In addition to being family-oriented, the'Dual Gigabit' can also empower thousands of industries, and can be applied to parks, factories, workshops, mines, ports, etc. on the B side of the industry," said Ao Li.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposed that, within three years, a "dual gigabit" network infrastructure covering urban areas and qualified townships will be basically completed, so that fixed and mobile networks generally have the capability of "gigabit to home".

It is currently a critical period for the development of "dual gigabit", and how to expand the application scenarios is one of the challenges.

Ao Li said that he hopes to use the "dual gigabit" network coordinated development action plan as a guide to continuously explore the research on the application of gigabit optical networks in vertical industries. The benchmark demonstrations formed can be promoted and replicated on a large scale.

The "dual gigabit" industry also has shortcomings in terms of chips, high-speed modules, and devices.

Mei Jie, the second-level researcher of the Network Development Division of the Information and Communication Development Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that efforts should be made to break through the common key basic shortcomings of the industry, consolidate the foundation of optical network development and industrial chain, and promote the self-reliance of China's ICT industry.
