Egyptian Antiquities Minister Khaled Al-Anani announced yesterday the start of the process of sterilizing the golden coffin of King Tutankhamun in preparation for its restoration.

"The coffin is a unique artifact and is due to be exhibited at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is expected to open in the last quarter of 2020," said Anani, after the 8-month renovation.

He added that the golden coffin of the king of the ancient Egyptian state was in a bad condition as a result of leaving him in the King's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor for 97 years without restoration.

Tutankhamun, who ascended to the throne in 1333 BC, is considered the most famous pharaoh in history, thanks to the discovery of his golden ark in 1922.
