Screening of Lovecraft and the return of Guy Ritchie: what to watch in the movie this week

Guy Ritchie’s crime comedy “Gentlemen,” which critics have dubbed the director’s return to basics, is rolling out this week. The drama “Scandal”, which claimed three Oscar figurines and received one of them for makeup and hairstyles, will also see the light of day. Also among the foreign novelties of the week are a fantastic horror based on the work of Howard Lovecraft's “Color from Other Worlds” and Luke Guadagnino's short drama “The Incredible”. Two Russian melodramas will be released among Russian-made paintings - Ice 2 and Nude.

The Gentlemen

Guy Ritchie’s gang comedy “Gentlemen” was shot in the director’s traditional style, so beloved by the audience. The film’s expectation rating on Kinopoisk is 97%, and the first critics have already called “Gentlemen” one of the main films of 2020.

The characters of this tape are very reminiscent of the heroes of the cult paintings "Cards, money, two trunks" and "Big jackpot". The new gangsters have become older, more experienced, richer, but still take part in the criminal showdowns, which are an integral part of the movie Universe Guy Ritchie.

In the story, the main character, the American Mickey (Matthew McConaughey), built a whole cannabis business empire. He wants to sell his illegal business to American billionaires, but there are others who want to receive part of the profit. After this, showdowns, skirmishes and other attributes begin that Guy Ritchie fans have missed over the past 11 years - all this time the director worked mainly on high-budget franchises that poorly demonstrate his author's style.

Scandal (Bombshell)

The drama Scandal on the fight against discrimination based on sex is based on real events. The film was nominated for an Oscar in three categories - Best Actress (Charlize Theron), Best Supporting Actress (Margot Robbie) and Best Makeup and Hair. In the latter, he managed to win.

The plot is based on real stories of Fox News employees who were sexually harassed by the channel’s CEO Roger Isles. One of the victims sued Isles and launched a campaign against harassment and gender discrimination inside the channel. Over time, several colleagues joined her, which ultimately led to the resignation of one of the most influential people in the media industry.

“Color from other worlds” (Color Out of Space)

“Color from Other Worlds” is a film adaptation of the eponymous short story by American writer Howard Lovecraft, combining elements of horror and science fiction. The so-called Lovecraftian horrors on the screen embodied the director Richard Stanley, traditionally working in the genre of horror and thriller.

The film tells about the life of a family of American farmers, next to whose house a meteorite fell. The chip glowed, did not cool, and gradually decreased in size; bands of unprecedented tones were found inside the meteorite, and unusual flowers began to grow around. In addition, the meteorite somehow affected the water in the area. Soon, something strange begins to happen to the heroes.

This film was shown at the Toronto Film Festival, where it caused mixed reactions. Many noted a weak scenario and inappropriate behavior of the characters, strange even for the described situations. But all the critics agreed on one thing: the Lovecraftian horror the director managed to convey in full.

The Incredible (The Staggering Girl)

"Incredible" - a 37-minute drama of the Italian Luca Guadagnino, best known for the paintings "Suspiria" and "Call me by your name." The film is inspired by the Valentino fashion house collection, whose clothes are worn by actors in the frame, and Pierpaolo Piccoli, creative director of the fashion brand, became one of the co-producers of the project.

The plot focuses on the story of the Italian writer Francesca, who lives in New York. At a social gathering, she accidentally discovers a picture of her mother, and, succumbing to the surging memories, goes to Italy to meet the ghosts of the past.

The world premiere of the film took place at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 in the program “Two Weeks of Directors”. The main role was played by Julianne Moore. The cast was supplemented by Mia Goth, Kyle McLachlan, Alba Rohrwacher, Martha Keller and Kiki Lane.

"Ice 2"

The sports melodrama “Ice 2” continues the story told in the first movie that was released exactly two years ago. Heroes Sasha (Alexander Petrov) and Nadia (Aglaya Tarasova) successfully passed all the trials of fate and stayed together. They have a baby. But then disaster reappears in the family.

“Ice” has become one of the most successful Russian films at the box office: its creators decided to shoot the sequel immediately after the release of the tape. The authors of the new picture promise the audience an exciting and very moving story, as well as a new unexpected musical accompaniment.

"Nude"

In "Nude", the shocking Chinese woman Yang Ge acted as a director, screenwriter, producer, artist, and also a leading performer. The film was presented at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2018, where it received a special jury prize.

Yang Ge played almost herself - a creative, comprehensively developed Chinese girl living in Moscow. The heroine experiences the consequences of unhappy love and, on the advice of her friend, decides to "knock the wedge with a wedge." However, finding a partner even for one night is not so simple. The girl leads a video blog through which she tries to figure out what is wrong with her and how to get rid of loneliness.

According to Yang Ge herself, in this picture she talks about the pain of parting and the problem of misunderstanding, and also demonstrates what tricks one sometimes has to go to convey her feelings.
