Plácido Arango, Mexican entrepreneur founder of the Vips restaurant chain, died Monday at age 88 in Madrid, according to sources close to this newspaper. Arango was a well-known businessman in our country, especially because he founded the aforementioned restaurant chain, which he sold to the Alsea Group two years ago.
He was born in 1931 in Tampico, Mexico, although he settled in Spain in 1965. Together with his brothers, he founded the Aurrerá supermarkets, which he later sold to Preciados Galleries. Then, also with his brothers, he founded Vips.
Arango is also known in Spain for his activity as a collector and because he has made donations to the Prado Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias.
