The labor cost at construction sites continues to rise due to the serious labor shortage, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will raise the unit price of labor, which is the standard for wages in public works, by 2.5% on a national average starting next month. And the unit price exceeded 20,000 yen for the first time.

The "unit cost of labor" is used as a standard for workers' daily wages when setting the estimated price of public works. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism checks the wages of companies that undertake public works and decides each year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has decided to raise the new labor unit price from next month by 2.5% on a nationwide average on Tuesday, and announced that the average unit price will be 22,214 yen.

The increase in labor unit cost has exceeded 20,000 yen for the ninth consecutive year since the announcement in 1997, for the first time.

This is because the construction industry continues to raise wages due to a serious labor shortage.

By region, the rate of increase is greater in the Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu regions, of which, in Shikoku, all prefectures raise it by about 5%.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has said that in these areas, labor shortages are likely to increase due to restoration and reconstruction work from devastating heavy rain disasters.
