US state of New Jersey announced on Tuesday that a policeman and 5 civilians were killed in an apparent gunfire that began in the wake of a failed drug deal in a neighborhood of Jersey City.
Mutual shooting between the militants and the police continued for a long time.
Police said her murdered operative was shot in the Bayview Cemetery by suspects who then escaped to a Jewish grocery store at the intersection of Martin Luther King and Wilkinson Street.
When the police reached the supermarket, the two suspects opened fire on the security forces.
The Hudson District Attorney's office confirmed that the policeman later died of his wounds.
Jersey City Mayor Stephen Fallop told a news conference on Tuesday afternoon that an unknown number of people had been killed inside the grocery store where they were when the suspects escaped. Police said one civilian was wounded.
After a period of confrontation, one gunman left the grocery store and continued to fire towards the security forces who cordoned off the place. Two policemen were shot, but they were in stable condition.
The suspects are believed to be holed up inside the shop, while the authorities sent a robot to confirm the matter.
The White House said that US President Donald Trump is following developments in Jersey City.
Rapid intervention teams headed to the site as police blocked one of the major roads in Jersey City on the bank of the Hudson River opposite the Manhattan area of New York City. The FBI confirmed that its personnel had gone to the site.
State Governor Phil Murphy confirmed that a number of police officers were wounded during the shooting, without revealing their number.
Media reported earlier that one policeman was wounded in the accident, noting that the injury was to the head while another spoke of being injured in the shoulder and that he was taken to hospital.
