Le malheur du bas

by Inès Bayard, republished on September 1, 2020 in Paperback.

Her favorite quote:

This vision of herself overwhelms her being with immense sadness.

The anger will surely come later.

Why this book?

  • Because the traumas of rape are so deep that

they forever generate a wound with which we will have to learn to live.

  • Because I was keen to discover what such an ordeal

can involve as mechanisms of survival, of defense, in a woman.

  • Because this novel missed the Goncourt des Lycéens prize by a hair

in 2018 and we are delighted to see it reissued in our pocket.

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

It is the journey of a happy woman, whose life is suddenly turned upside down following a rape, and who gently makes her slide into the confines of madness….

Characters.

Laurent, the husband who loves his wife and thrives professionally.

Marie his wife who is a happy woman, fulfilled until this terrible ordeal which leaves her wounded in the depths of herself.

Marie's family who share their joy at seeing them happy.

Places.

Paris, rue du Temple, a district that the characters love.

The time.

The current era, with the dynamism that characterizes young adults who settle in life, and who have a thousand projects.

The author.

Young first author, Inès Bayard gives us a novel of a violence that grabs us.

She takes the side of using shocking words which signify a desire to say things without make-up.

This book was read with

 lively and raw emotion.

An emotion that the author does not try to diminish and that she seems to wish to see expressed with our feelings, whatever they are.
