The smartphone is the Germans' favorite device.

Today, three quarters would rather do without a car than their smart cell phone.

In the home country of Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen, this is a slap in the face for car manufacturers.

Or just a homage to the smartphone manufacturers, who - with the exception of smaller manufacturers such as Gigaset - come from abroad.

The spread of devices is still increasing in this country.

There are now 56 million users, almost 80 percent of the population over the age of 16.

But for many, one thing doesn't seem to be enough, because on average each of these smartphone users has 1.4 devices.

Every third person has at least two devices in use, four percent three devices or more.

These are the results of a representative survey by the digital association Bitkom, which was presented last week.

Never before have Germans let their smartphones cost so much.

On average, they spend 495 euros on this.

However, this value is only increasing slightly, most recently by just one euro within a year.

The reason: The share of Chinese manufacturers with cheap but high-quality models in the market is growing.

This can also be seen in the sales statistics from market researcher Gartner.

The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi was able to grow by almost 34 percent in the last Christmas quarter, while Oppo sold almost 14 percent more worldwide.

Both Chinese manufacturers are also very successful in Germany.

New devices are presented by the manufacturers every year.

The users also orientate themselves towards this.

According to the Bitkom survey, almost two thirds have bought their current smartphone within the past twelve months.

Battery life, screen quality and storage space are among the most important criteria when buying a smartphone.

What will disappoint the manufacturers: the brand only plays a role for a little more than half of the users.

Most of the money, however, is not spent on the devices.

Users pay almost twice as much for making phone calls and using the mobile Internet, which is around 20 billion euros a year in Germany.

In doing so, they often seem to be booking data packets that are too small.

Six out of ten users indicate in the survey that their monthly data volume is insufficient and that their speed will be throttled before the end of the month.

Only every third person claims to have enough data available.

The packages booked are getting bigger and bigger.

While the proportion of contracts with up to five gigabytes decreases, it increases significantly for volumes of more than five gigabytes.

With faster networks, the need for larger packages also increases.

Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica have now launched their networks of the latest, fifth generation of mobile communications, 5G - and are hoping for additional income.

According to the Bitkom survey, most users are willing on average to spend an additional eleven euros per month for the higher speed, four euros more per month than in the previous year.

However, a good every fourth user would not pay anything extra for 5G.
