UN: Palestinians relaunch procedure to become member state

This is one of those parallel consequences of the Hamas-Israel war: the Palestinians want to become a full member of the UN. They officially relaunched the procedure Tuesday evening April 2 in New York. The Palestinian ambassador requested it in a letter to the head of the UN, their request was sponsored by the Arab countries who made the approach to the Security Council. The Palestinian Authority's goal is for the issue to be examined quickly, during the month of April.

One hundred and forty UN

member states

currently recognize the State of

Palestine

, so the Palestinians believe that it is now time that they can be full members of the international organization, and no longer hold a simple seat. observer.

To do this, they must first obtain a positive recommendation from the Security Council, then have it validated by a two-thirds majority vote in the General Assembly, and finally, again, confirmation from the Council.

Joe Biden under pressure

In 2011, the Palestinian Authority launched this procedure, but it never came to fruition: Barack Obama threatened to veto it, arguing that the two-state solution should be negotiated between it and Israel.

Given the context and international sympathy after six months of intense bombing of Gaza, it will be more complicated to convince the Palestinians not to expose Washington.

Joe Biden will find himself under even more intense pressure between his Democratic voters unhappy with his unconditional support for

Benyamin Netanyahu

and Israel. And risks being put in direct contradiction with its desire to push for a two-state solution.
