Gasoline has become significantly more expensive again since mid-March. The price for the Super E10 variety has risen for the third week in a row, as the ADAC announced on Wednesday. The nationwide daily average on Tuesday was 1.83 euros per liter of fuel. That was 2.2 cents more than a week ago and 7.3 cents more than March 12th. The price of diesel, on the other hand, hardly changed. On Tuesday it was 1.732 euros per liter: 0.2 cents higher than a week ago and 1.5 cents more than three weeks ago.

The ADAC sees the higher oil price as the main reason for the current increase in gasoline. On the raw materials markets, a barrel of Brent crude oil now costs almost $90 again. This is the highest level in five months.

At what time of day is refueling particularly cheap?

According to the transport club, the fact that diesel is less affected by this development is probably due to the impending end of the heating season and overall weaker demand. In spring it is often observed that diesel prices fall in relation to gasoline. The background is the then falling demand for heating oil, which is very similar to diesel.

However, at just over 10 cents, the difference between the two types of fuel is still significantly lower than the tax difference and the long-term average from the period before the Ukraine war. Around 20 cents more energy tax is due on petrol than on diesel.

If you want to save money on gas, you should go to the pump in the evening if possible, advises the ADAC. Evaluations have shown that on average the lowest prices are quoted at gas stations between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. But you can also fill up relatively cheaply between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. It's completely different in the morning, when many drivers rush to work under time pressure: According to ADAC, the prices at the pumps are then the highest.
