Ceasefire in Gaza: France brings an “ambitious” draft resolution to the UN

It took weeks for the Security Council to agree on a ceasefire in Gaza. But he was only able to call for a temporary cessation of hostilities, during Ramadan. The diplomats are aware that this is not enough and France suggests that they get back to work. Nicolas de Rivière, the French ambassador to the United Nations, will present an “

ambitious text

” and said it would take time.

The French ambassador presented to his counterparts on Monday April 1 a draft resolution at the

UN

, requesting a permanent ceasefire and already preparing for the post-war period. The text calls for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip and also demands the release of all hostages still held in the enclave.

Ramadan expires in a week, so the French resolution that I am going to present covers three parts: the first is the emergency, a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian access, the release of the hostages, the condemnation of the Hamas attack, this is the first part. The second part concerns the reconstruction of Gaza, the Palestinian authority, the day after in Gaza, the role of the United Nations, so it concerns the question of Gaza after this crisis. And the third dimension of this resolution aims, broadly, to relaunch a political process leading to the two-State solution. So it is an ambitious text, and we will take the time necessary for it to be adopted. I do not expect it to be put to a vote in the coming days

,” commented French Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière,

This project will be debated and negotiated for several weeks certainly, given the dissensions in the UN Security Council on the subject. To be adopted, the text must be approved by at least nine of the fifteen members of the Security Council and not be vetoed by one of the four other permanent members of the Council, i.e. the United States, Great Britain, Russia and China.

On March 26, 2024, fourteen members of the Security Council approved a text calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan, which will end next week. The United States did not veto it, which caused a real open crisis between Israel and the United States.
