The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has announced that it will support approximately 1 billion yen to support the joint efforts of domestic automakers and semiconductor manufacturers to develop cutting-edge semiconductor technology for autonomous driving and other technologies.

Last December, automakers such as Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda, and semiconductor-related companies such as Renesas Electronics, established a new organization, ASRA, to develop cutting-edge semiconductor technology for autonomous driving and other applications.

On the 29th, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that it will support approximately 1 billion yen for this organization's development of cutting-edge technology that increases performance by combining multiple semiconductor chips.

The key to competition in autonomous driving technology is how to improve semiconductor performance in order to increase processing speed and keep power consumption low, and the organization aims to develop the technology by 2028, four years from now. The company aims to establish this technology and install it in the mass-produced vehicles of each company from 2030 onwards.

Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito said at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting on the 29th, ``In the automotive field, the use of advanced semiconductors with high performance, low power consumption, and high reliability is progressing, leading to the realization of intelligent and electrified vehicles. I have high expectations.”
