UN Security Council adopts resolution for 'immediate ceasefire' in Gaza
In New York, the United Nations Security Council voted this Monday, March 25, by 14 votes in favor of a text demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This resolution also calls for the immediate release of the hostages and demands that doctors and humanitarian workers be able to see them as quickly as possible. It took five months and three weeks for the Council to agree and demand to stop the bombings with one voice.

This ceasefire in
Gaza
officially demanded by the international community is only planned for the duration of Ramadan. This shows how tense the negotiations remained here in New York. They of course reflect the negotiations that are slipping on the ground. A call for a ceasefire for Ramadan was called for by
Sudan
ten days ago, and it would have been a very bad signal if the
United States
did not accept it and blocked it for Gaza.
In recent days,
Joe Biden
has changed his position towards his Israeli ally. He was finally ready to demand a ceasefire, something Washington had been blocking for more than five months. But
Benyamin Netanyahu
's stubbornness
on a possible attack on Rafah pushes him to raise his voice and no longer protect him unconditionally at the UN.
Washington does not, however, accept a permanent ceasefire. In fact, this resolution still provided, a few hours before the vote, for a ceasefire for Ramadan, with the idea of ultimately reaching a permanent agreement. The United States negotiated a more vague term for a lasting agreement at the last minute, a sign that Washington still wants to retain a means of putting pressure on both
Israel
and Hamas.
