Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. is voluntarily recalling three types of health foods that contain red yeast rice because people who consumed health foods containing this ingredient developed kidney disease.
According to the company, the first reports of suspected health hazards from people who consumed the affected foods and doctors who examined them were on January 15th, but the company announced a voluntary recall this month. It took just over two months from the first report to the announcement.
Regarding this, the company stated that at the time of the initial report, it was not known that ``health foods may have been the cause,'' and that it took time to investigate.
According to the company, 26 people have been confirmed to have been hospitalized after ingesting the affected products and complaining of feeling unwell.
