Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will step down as head of the embattled planemaker by the end of the year after a series of setbacks at one of America's most prominent companies.

Board Chairman Larry Kellner has also told the company that he does not plan to run for re-election.

In January, the United States air regulator, the

Federal Aviation Administration

(FAA), opened an investigation into Boeing with an Alaska Airlines

737-9 (MAX)

, from which part of the fuselage detached in mid-flight.

Previously, the US Government had ordered the immobilization of all Boeing 737-9 (MAX) aircraft "until they are safe."
