The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will introduce a new system to evaluate the efforts of automakers, such as the development of charging infrastructure, to determine the amount of subsidies for the spread of electric vehicles (EV).

From next year, the subsidy amount will change depending on the evaluation, and in some cases there will be a difference of 200,000 yen depending on the manufacturer, even for jointly developed cars.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has decided to review the subsidy system for buyers starting next fiscal year in order to accelerate the spread of EVs, which is lagging behind China and Europe.

Up until now, subsidies were determined for each vehicle model based on performance such as cruising distance, but in order to reflect the efforts of each manufacturer, the number of quick chargers each company has installed and the after-sales service structure have been changed. etc. will also be included in the evaluation.

As a result, for the SUV (multi-purpose sports vehicle EV) jointly developed by Toyota Motor Corporation and Subaru, the subsidy amount for Toyota cars was 850,000 yen, while for Subaru cars it was 650,000 yen, a difference of 200,000 yen. is appearing.

On the other hand, the light vehicle type EV jointly developed by Nissan Motors and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation costs the same amount of 550,000 yen.

Compared to this year, the subsidy amount will decrease the most for some types of SUVs sold by Chinese EV giant BYD, which will be 350,000 yen, 500,000 yen less.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is encouraging manufacturers to further popularize the system by offering different subsidy amounts for cars with the same driving performance.
