West Bank: in Ramallah, the appointment of the new Prime Minister leaves the Palestinians unmoved

As the war in the Gaza Strip has entered its sixth month and the prospect of an agreement recedes day by day, there is something of a beginning of movement in Palestinian internal politics.

On Thursday evening, March 14, Mohammad Mustapha was officially appointed head of the Palestinian Authority government and took office.

For the Palestinians, him or anyone else, the issue is of little importance.

With our correspondent in Ramallah,

The

appointment of Mohammad Mustapha

as head of government, following Mohammad Shtayyeh,

who resigned in February

, is almost no news on the streets of Ramallah.

This will not change anything

,” says Ahmad,

“we will always have the same Palestinian authority: illegitimate, aging and corrupt.

We have no real democratic life.

Since 2007, there have been no legislative elections.

I hope that in the future, if we manage to have elections, we will see real change.

For the moment, it has not taken place

,” he specifies.

The new Prime Minister is an economist who doesn't make waves and a close friend of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president who remains in power and governs by decree for years now.

And even if there are elections, “

what’s the point if the parties represented are always the same?”

» asks Bilal, another young person who works in Ramallah.

If there are Palestinian elections, I will only vote for the people.

Hamas?

Fatah?

No thanks.

We are part of the same people so deep down, we should all have the same goal: not to have more money, power, cars.

In fact, we only want one thing, and that is our freedom.

 »

He only asks one thing, “

to live in peace, with rights, all those who are respected when you live in another country

” he says, before adding that this is not what the new Prime Minister risks bringing him.
