PKK banned in Iraq following discussions between Iraqi and Turkish ministers

Baghdad announces it is banning the Kurdistan Workers' Party, the PKK, an organization considered terrorist by Ankara, which has numerous bases in the mountains of northern Iraq.

A decision in fact which could have little concrete implication on the ground.

Iraq and Turkey would therefore have reached an agreement.

The PKK would represent a “security threat to both countries”.

Iraq

Turkey

would therefore have reached an agreement

.

The

PKK

would represent a “

 security threat to both countries

 ”.

These are the terms of the joint statement from senior Turkish and Iraqi officials, after their meeting in Baghdad, announcing the ban on the PKK.

Reccep Tayyip Erdogan must go to Baghdad and Erbil at the end of April,”

says Adel Bakawan, director of the French Center for Research on Iraq.

The joint statement by Iraq and Turkey regarding the PKK reflects the mutual needs of Baghdad and Ankara in relation to the management of files.

We are in a symbolic order and not in concrete and practicable projects.

The PKK will not be easily displaced

The idea of joint measures against the PKK is present in the press release.

But Adel Bakawan doubts any real change on the Iraqi side, inclined until now to condemn Turkish attacks on its territory: “

The PKK has strong support from the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraqi militia organizations.

As a result, it is unlikely that the PKK will be in an ultra-critical situation in the coming weeks in relation to a massive Turkish-Iraqi attack.

 »

Individual action by Turkey is not excluded.

But what is certain is that the PKK will not be easily displaced.
