Aldi wants to open 800 more supermarkets in the USA in the next five years.

The supermarket chain in the USA said that more than nine billion dollars have been earmarked for this by the end of 2028.

The head of Aldi in the USA, Jason Hart, said that the discounter has been opening hundreds of new supermarkets every year in the United States for more than ten years.

Demand is still high.

“Our customers are demanding more supermarkets in their neighborhoods across the country,” Hart said.

With the planned 800 new locations, “we will be where customers want us.”

In August 2023, Aldi took over the US chains Winn-Dixie and Harveys with almost 400 branches.

Some stores should continue to exist under their current name, others should be converted into Aldi branches.

At the end of 2023, Aldi had more than 2,400 stores in the USA.

According to analyst Neil Saunders of Globaldata, the planned expansion will hit the competition hard.

Aldi, with its low prices and “modern and attractive branches,” could force other retailers to lower their prices in order to remain competitive.

That reduces their margins.

The discounter’s expansion is “good news” for consumers.

The company has been present in the USA since 1976.

The Aldi stores in the country are owned by Aldi Süd, while Aldi Nord owns the popular Trader Joe's chain in the USA.
