The number of foreign tourists who visited Japan in January was more than 2.6 million, almost the same level as before the spread of the new coronavirus, due to a recovery in inbound demand.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, an estimated 2,688,100 foreign tourists visited Japan in January, exceeding 2.5 million for the second consecutive month.

In January 2019, before the spread of the new coronavirus, there were more than 2,689,300 people, almost the same level.

By country and region,

South Korea has the highest number of people with 857,000 people

, followed by Taiwan with 492,300 people

, China with 415,900 people

, and Hong Kong with 186,300 people.

The Japan National Tourism Organization said, ``The number of tourists from a wide range of countries and regions in Asia, such as South Korea and Taiwan, is exceeding the number before the coronavirus outbreak. The number of tourists from the United States and Australia has also increased, partly due to the weaker yen. This appears to have led to a recovery in demand."

On the other hand, although the number of tourists from China is on a recovery trend, it is only about half of the number in January 2019 before the coronavirus outbreak, and the Japan National Tourism Organization said, ``China's economy is in decline due to a prolonged slump in the real estate market.'' "It seems that the growing sense of uncertainty about the future is also having an impact."
