In order to commercialize a technology called "CCS" that stores carbon dioxide deep underground, a demonstration experiment to transport carbon dioxide by ship will begin this October, and the transport ship was unveiled to the press on the 16th. .

In order to realize a decarbonized society, the government aims to commercialize "CCS" in 2030, which captures carbon dioxide emitted from factories and stores it more than 1 km deep underground.

The issue of being able to transport large amounts of carbon dioxide stably has become an issue, and starting in October this year, NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) will begin operating ships between Tomakomai City in Hokkaido and Maizuru City in Kyoto Prefecture. We will begin a demonstration experiment to transport carbon dioxide using this technology.

On the 16th, a transport ship with a total length of 72 meters and equipped with two tanks to carry 850 tons of liquefied carbon dioxide was unveiled to the press at the port of Yokohama City.

In transportation, it is important to increase the size of the tank and to be able to control the temperature and pressure inside the tank within a certain range.

Through this demonstration experiment, they aim to establish transportation technology by 2026, and in the future, aim to commercialize a transport ship that can carry 50,000 to 70,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

NEDO's Environment Director Shigekazu Fukunaga said, ``If transport ships can be put into practical use, it will be possible to transport large amounts of carbon dioxide at low cost.We hope that this will lead to an important step toward realizing a decarbonized society.'' I am.
