Iraq: anger rises after drone attack targeting pro-Iranian armed group commander in Baghdad

In Iraq, a new stage has been reached in the clashes between Iraqi armed factions close to Iran and the United States. On Wednesday February 7, the American army carried out a targeted attack in the heart of Baghdad against the vehicle of a senior official of an armed faction, suspected of being behind attacks against American interests.

Anger continues to rise in Iraq. The operation carried out by the United States, this Wednesday, February 7, is unanimously condemned. The spokesperson for the Iraqi government, in a press release, denounces an American strategy which puts the civilian population in danger and once again violates Iraqi sovereignty.

After the American bombings in the west of the country last week, this targeted strike, against a senior commander of an armed group, in the middle of the street, in a residential district of Baghdad, is seen as a new step taken by the United States in Iraq, which increases the pressure.

According to the statement from the government spokesperson, Baghdad is now obliged to demand the departure of the international coalition forces. Discussions have already begun to end or modify the mandate of this coalition. But these will take time.

And the Iraqi armed factions are demanding their immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Some of them see this strike as a declaration of war.
