  • Civil Service Civil servants are already considering a second additional salary increase of 0.5% thanks to economic growth

  • Escrivá Public Service launches negotiations to raise the salaries of civil servants and expand the workforce of public workers

Civil servants will receive an additional salary increase

of 0.5%, the second from 2023

and which will be applied with effect from January 1 of last year. The first was the result of the evolution of inflation, and this second is confirmed after the 2.5% growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has announced today. In total, the salary of public workers rose by 3.5% in 2023.

In that multi-year agreement that was signed in 2022, it was stated that if the economy grew by 2.1%, officials would register an additional increase of half a point. And that figure has been notably exceeded since

the rebound in 2023 was 2.5%,

a figure that even exceeded the Government's forecasts.

The part linked to inflation indicated that the CPI data for September should exceed 6%, a circumstance that also occurred comfortably since the figure went to 8.7%. At that time, Public Function reported that the increase benefited "3.5 million people who carry out their work for the Public Administrations", with a total cost of 791 million and "with

an average increase of 180 euros in the payroll annual

". The amounts in this second case will be slightly higher since the increases are cumulative.

This improvement also occurs when the unions have already begun to negotiate the next salary increases. The aforementioned multi-year plan expires this year, a year in which the fixed increase will be 2%.

The final figure could reach 2.5% depending on the evolution of inflation

.

Last week, CSIF already met with the new Minister of Public Service, José Luis Escrivá, who launched the negotiation process for salary improvements and, also, an increase in staff. "Everything was at a standstill.

We value the importance of this commitment

and to start working on the reforms that the public service needs," CSIF assessed. For its part, UGT has already confirmed that its objective is to "guarantee salary increases for all public employees

above the real CPI

, which means maintaining or gaining purchasing power, in coherence with the socioeconomic situation of the country."
