They are "too rich to be helped and not rich enough to live well", in the words of Emmanuel Macron... So the executive is preparing a Marshall Plan for the middle classes who must be able to make a better living from their work. The President of the Republic has promised 2 billion in tax cuts for this socio-economic category whose definition is often debated. Precisely, the annual report of the Observatory of inequalities, unveiled Thursday, makes it possible to see more clearly.

One in two French people

Like one in two French people, you may be part of the middle classes. In this case, you are in the middle of the income scale, between the working classes and the wealthy categories. "We belong to the middle classes when we are above the poorest 30% of French people, but below the richest 20%. After taxes, it is when you earn between 1,500 and 2,700 euros of salary for a single person. And for a family with two 14-year-old children, it corresponds to 3,700 euros minimum and 6,700 euros maximum, "says Anne Brunner, director of studies at the Observatory of inequalities.

Unskilled worker, handler, cleaner, there are jobs typical of the working classes, and this is also the case for the middle classes. "This is what we call intermediate professions, when we are between the executives who lead, who command and then employees or workers who are more in executive positions. Typically, it will be a team leader on a construction site, a foreman in a factory but it is also the nurses, some of the teachers. And then we could add some of the self-employed, small entrepreneurs, artisan traders, as well as workers and employees who have more qualified positions with average incomes, "she adds at the microphone of Europe 1.

Of course, it is possible to change social category by being promoted or increased. The Observatory of Inequalities places the threshold for entry into the wealthy classes at 2,700 euros for a single person and 4,800 euros for a couple with two children.
