The German association Campact has launched an online campaign, which has already been joined by more than 140,000 citizens, demanding that supermarket chains, such as Edeka and Lidl, stop selling strawberries from Spain so as not to contribute to the drying of the Doñana National Park.

"This is bitter. Supermarket chains must take responsibility and remove these strawberries from their assortment. It is the only way to put pressure on the Junta de Andalucía and save the national park," he adds.

Strawberry producers watch over weapons in the 'war' of Doñana: "If we continue like this there will be no water for anyone"

Supermarket chains such as "Edeka, Lidl and company contribute indirectly to the drying up of the Doñana National Park by selling strawberries from the drought," says Friederike Gravenhorst, Campact's campaign manager.

Campact, an association that organizes campaigns on the Internet and describes itself as a "citizen movement with which more than 2.5 million people defend a progressive policy", warns in a statement released today that "to grow cheap strawberries for Germany, Spain runs the risk of a drought catastrophe in one of its most important national parks. "

They denounce that agricultural companies illegally pump water from the "long gone" Doñana National Park, to supply strawberries to Germany and the rest of Europe even in winter.

"Especially after the electoral success of the Popular Party in the regional and local elections last weekend, there is a danger that water theft will now be officially allowed," warn from the association.

The signatories of the appeal are addressed to the largest German supermarket chains – Edeka, Lidl, Rewe and Aldi – "because although Spanish strawberries are sold throughout Europe, the main customer is Germany."

If German supermarkets, where a third of these "drought strawberries" end up, stop buying the fruit, "business goes under, and the national park would still have a chance," Campact says.
