The Government does not guarantee that the discount on fuel for professionals and the reduction of VAT on food will be extended beyond June. The first vice president of the Executive, Nadia Calviño, stressed that Europe is asking that the aid be withdrawn, and that in that context the Government will assess next month what to do with these actions. What "is" expected to be extended throughout the year, he added, is the "reduction inelectricity taxes", as it is included in the General State Budget.

Calviño, in an interview on Catalunya Radio, has even hinted that the reduction in fuel would end definitively in June. "We have been reducing [the aid] and it ends in June," said the economy minister. Subsequently, from the Ministry it has been qualified that he meant that the aid, effectively, ends next month and that will be the time to assess whether it should be maintained. And in that assessment it will be taken into account that the situation has changed significantly since the reduction was introduced, and that the price of fuels has moderated.

The same does not happen, however, with food, which remains at very high levels and Calviño herself has acknowledged that "attention is very focused" on this area. However, the vice-president has avoided guaranteeing that the VAT reduction will be maintained during the second half of the year.

"Although inflation has fallen three and a half points, we have to be very aware of the possible impact of the drought," he said, adding that "the price of food is the most worrying element because it is what most affects the pockets of citizens."
