 After the lifting of the

[United Nations] embargo on

the purchase of conventional weapons in October 2020, Iran finalized the contract to purchase Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets

,” the Iranian agency said. Irna, citing the representation of the Islamic Republic to the UN.

This agency did not provide more details on the contract, but Iran and Russia have been in discussions for years for the delivery of Russian fighter jets to Tehran.

Dangerous

 " climbing

The United States, sworn enemies of Iran, threatens heavy sanctions on any country trading with Iranian forces, particularly the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic placed on its blacklist of "terrorist organizations

 "

 .

At the same time, Washington is alarmed by the "

dangerous

" escalation in military cooperation between Iran and Russia, with Tehran being accused of supplying drones used in Ukraine, which Iran denies.

The "

Sukhoi Su-35s were technically acceptable to Iran

(...)

and Russia announced that it was ready to sell them to the Islamic Republic

 ", added Irna.

Iranian Defense Minister Mohamad-Reza Ashtiani said Monday that Tehran was "

still pursuing the purchase

" of Sukhoi Su-35s, but "has not yet received the equipment".

300 combat aircraft

The Iranian Air Force already has some 300 Russian (Mig-29 and Su-25), Chinese (F-7), American (F-4, F-5 and F-14) and French ( Mirage F1), as well as some Saeqeh, an Iranian version of the American F-5, according to experts.

Tehran and Moscow signed a contract in 2007 for the delivery of the Russian S-300 anti-missile system, but in 2010 Moscow suspended the sale in application of a UN Security Council resolution against Iran's nuclear program.

In 2015, shortly before the conclusion of an international agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, Moscow again authorized the delivery of the S-300.

Iran's Defense Ministry said in May 2016 that its country was now "

in possession of the strategic S-300 system

".
