The Government has given itself

18 months of margin

to start the liberalization of the air traffic control services of seven Spanish airports.

This is the largest privatization of air traffic controllers that has been proposed in Spain.

The Ministry of Transport has brought to a public hearing this Tuesday the draft ministerial order, the first step for the transfer of these control services from the public company Enaire, national air navigation manager, to private providers.

The tender will be in the hands of Aena, the airport manager, which must start the procedures for the selection of the new air traffic service providers, at the latest, in August 2024.

The bases in contention will be those of

Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago, Tenerife South and Tenerife North

, as announced by

El Confidencial

.

The deadline for the public consultation process will be one month, until March 10.

Industry sources foresee an avalanche of contributions from all the agents involved.

In the proposed order, the ministry headed by Raquel Sánchez takes pride in the good results that the private management of these services has shown in the already liberalized bases.

And it is that the privatization of the air control posts started in 2011. The management of the airports of

Sabadell, Madrid-Cuatro Vientos;

A Coruña, Alicante, Ibiza, Jerez, Seville, Valencia, Vigo, La Palma, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

are already in private hands.

In Spain, two suppliers share the

cake

,

Saerco

and

Ferronats

, the latter is the former subsidiary of Ferrovial that the Spanish construction company sold a year ago to the Portobello fund.

Sources from the concession business assure this newspaper that the news of the future tender has captured the interest of companies and investment funds that, while waiting to find out the conditions and fine print of the process, are already studying their entry into this business.
