The appeal was published by the American NGO Freedom House.

The triumph of freedom in Iran could revive the global wave of democratization that was so strong at the end of the 20th century, but which weakened in the face of the authoritarian counterattack

", can we read in particular.

Some 480 personalities signed this declaration, including the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievitch, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and actor Richard Gere.

Some signatories are Iranians in exile, such as US-based dissident Masih Alinejad, actress Golshifteh Farahani, who lives in France, footballer Ali Karimi and the son of the Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi.

The Iranian people have made themselves clear: They want freedom and democracy.

Not dictatorship and theocracy.

In the eyes of Freedom House President Michael Abramowitz, the appeal "

shows the remarkable unity of a broad coalition drawn from around the world, from all political persuasions and all segments of society

."

The Iranian protesters “

deserve unwavering support from freedom lovers around the world

,” the text says.

Their victory “

would mean deliverance from a regime that denies free elections, freedom of speech, fair rule of law, and personal freedom in areas as simple as the choice of clothing.

Ending the Islamic Republic's system of misogyny would be a global turning point in the long march towards a world where women are treated equally.

Since last September, and the death of a young woman, Masha Amini, at the hands of the morality police, actions of defiance of the Tehran regime have not ended, despite brutal repression.

The Iranian people's victory over IR repression would be a major step toward global equity.

They cannot do it alone... the Iranian people need your support!

The statement calls on governments around the world to impose sanctions on all Iranian officials implicated in this crackdown, including Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

She asks that the Revolutionary Guards, armed wing of the regime, be classified as a terrorist organization.

Finally, the signatories want the leaders of "

democratic governments

" to receive the leaders of the Iranian opposition in "

publicly announced meetings

".
