• Yolanda Díaz proposes to raise the Minimum Wage twice a year: once now and review it in 6 months with inflation

The second vice president and Minister of Labor,

Yolanda Díaz

, competent to approve the

increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI),

has shown herself this Monday in favor of an increase by 2023 to

1,082 euros

in fourteen payments from the current 1,000 euros, but not It has specified when this increase will materialize or

why the delay is due,

given that the increase is intended to be applied from January 1.

"After learning about the report of the committee of experts (of the Ministry of Labor),

I am in favor of looking towards the upper section

. Of course we are going to raise the SMI without a doubt (...) It is the best measure and the most effective way to improve job insecurity", pointed out the vice-president, who said that

she does not know if she will meet with the social agents this week

to address the increase again, although different tables are planned in the social dialogue.

"I don't know if this week for the SMI, but we have a social dialogue table," she pointed out.

The Ministry's Committee of experts recommended raising the SMI in 2023 between 4.6% (up to

1,046 euros

) and 8.2% (up to

1,082 euros)

, so given that the vice president has opted for "the high section" of that fork, it follows that the increase will be up to 1,082.

In any case, given that how much the SMI rises

is solely a Government decision,

without the need for an agreement with the unions and employers, the delay in the decision is not understandable, when many

companies want to already pay that amount in the January payroll. update

to avoid having to do it retroactively later and when

workers

at those wage levels

are also waiting to find out if they will be paid more this year

.

Sources close to the social dialogue

justify the delay in the internal negotiations

that would be taking place

within the coalition Executive itself

, where there could be no consensus on what the optimal increase is.

These discrepancies would not be new, since in previous increases of the SMI there have been conflicting

opinions between the Ministry of Labor

and the Ministry of

Economy

, headed by the first vice president

Nadia Calviño.

In fact, the spokesman for the

Ministry of Economy

within the Committee of experts has already shown his

disagreement

with this recommended fork and included an

annex

to the final document in which he

advised an increase in the SMI up to 1,030 euros,

even lower than the minimum recommended by that group .

.

Employers and unions do not have to negotiate this increase with the Government, but

it is mandatory to consult them

.

In a first meeting before Christmas, the

UGT and CCOO

were in favor of the SMI reaching

1,100 euros

in 2023 and, failing that, at the top of the fork,

1,082 euros

.

Now, both ask the Executive to come clean as soon as possible and say what its decision is.

The

CEOE and Cepyme

did not attend that meeting and sent their proposal in writing, in which they ask for a minor increase, up to

1,040 euros,

in exchange for certain conditions.

Their objective is to try

to keep the rise as low as possible

and, despite the fact that they threatened to break off the dialogue with the Ministry due to their pact with Bildu, they are willing to return to the table if they are summoned to talk about the SMI.

Since then they have not met again and it is unknown when they will, although all parties request

that the measure be taken as soon as possible.
